LOCAL BUSINESS – Construction is underway for the new Semora Walmart - well not really a Walmart but it is a Dollar General at the flashing light. These stores go up fairly quick so it may be in operation late summer.

The Oak Tree Tavern at VIR Resort has specials so check out our homepage for the details at: www.hycolake.com Also during the month on each Friday night the Oak Tree Tavern will have dinner music from 5:30 to about 9:00. Come on out and enjoy the tavern or dining room with a great meal and refreshments! Check our calendar at www.hycolake.com to see who the other performers are.

Don’t forget that Monday nights at Oak Tree Tavern at VIR is still doing the Steak, Spud and Suds dinner special for only $8.

VIR Events – The Chump Car Series returns August 11 & 12. These are grass roots people who love going fast in just about anything. Last time I saw some station-wagons gutted out going fast. http://virnow.com/events/

ENTERTAINMENT – This Friday is the Virginia Cantaloupe Festival in South Boston at the fairgrounds. I remember when they used to have it at John Wade's farm in Turbeville in a pasture. They cooked beef in pits in the ground and had live music. Now they have it at the fairgrounds behind the racetrack. Our own The Pizazz Band is performing so Kent will be hot on stage I know. All food, drink and entertainment included in the price of the ticket. Our Chamber of Commerce has tickets available. See more info at: http://www.valopefest.com/

Bar 119 in Semora is having Chris Lane this Saturday night and The Switch is back on August 4th. Check them out at: http://www.bar119nc.com/

Flem Whitt Beach Music Festival is also coming up next weekend at Hyco Lake August 4th. Our own Roxboro Jaycees put this own each year and it draws a large crowd with people coming from surrounding counties. Where else can you get to hear The Band of Oz, The Holiday Band and Jim Quick and Coastline Band with the price of one ticket? Budweiser products included in the ticket. Please bring an ID with you. Also lawn chairs are allowed and a cooler with water and ice only. Food available on site. Tickets available online at: http://www.flemwhitt.com/ or from local businesses. Shuttles are available from Roxboro motels if you like to stay overnight. Funds raised go to help the Jaycees support local charities.

Warm Waters Restaurant Bar & Grill is having bands in August so check out our calendar to see who's playing on www.hycolake.com

Keep up with the latest entertainment on our Calendar on the homepage at www.hycolake.com We’ve updated the calendar on the site so check it out for local events. Click on an event to get more detail.

PERSONAL FAVORITE – Speaking of cantaloupes previously, lately Bonnie and I have been going down to Turbeville which is between Danville and South Boston on Hwy 58 to get cantaloupes available on a roadside stand near the fire department. (You can't miss it because the fire department is the only thing in Turbeville!) $1 for small and $2.50 for the large. They sure are good. The locals claim that the rich grounds near the Dan River give the cantaloupe their sweet taste. I can't argue with them on that! You can enjoy a scenic ride by going down Cunningham Road straight into Virginia and when you stop at Hwy 58, turn right and then be ready to arrive at Turbeville on the left. You may notice a large commercial operation on the drive down Cunningham - that is a water bottling operation.

Another favorite of mine is actually a cleaner/restorer for pontoon boats. DuraGloss makes a cleaner/brightener that is really easy to use. Just put the solution in a garden sprayer, spray on about a ten foot section of the pontoon, brush a little with a bristle brush and rinse. When rinsing, start from the bottom up. It really works great. I bought a gallon at the NAPA store in Roxboro.

ADVISORY – There have been several break-ins lately around the lake. Be sure to take note of any strange vehicles in your area. Most times these people "case" the home and may watch for your routine or even be posing as possible home buyers in your area. If you encounter any suspicious activity, be sure to get the vehicle license plate or take a photo of the vehicle and note the time/date. There are officers working to try to nail these people. If you have any suspect info you can also send it to me and I will forward to the people working to resolve this. It's going to take someone witnessing the crime in action or recording it on video. We have video recording in our neighborhood and also signage stating it is in operation. So far we haven't had any problem. Send any info to me at: randy@hycolake.com

ADVERTISER HIGHLIGHT – Bar 119 in Semora is one of the favorite area places to enjoy live music and dancing. When Brad took over, he added several nice amenities there so if you haven't been lately, go by and check them out. Come in from the heat and enjoy your favorite brew. More info at their web site: http://www.bar119nc.com/

LAKE LEVEL – You can always get real-time data on the www.hycolake.com web site from USGS or click here. The USGS webpage now shows you the elevation above sea level. 410.5’ is normal level. You can now get a text message or email if the lake level is at a parameter you set. I’ve set my notice to occur at 411.5 feet which is 1 foot above normal. This would be the time I need to remove stuff on the dock and make sure the boats are raised high enough to keep them on the lifts! See the link on the USGS site or click here.
