Person
County Farmers Market Opening Saturday, April 30
The new Person County Farmers Market will open for the 2011 season
on Saturday, April 30 from 8 A.M. - 12 Noon, according to Carl
Cantaluppi, Area Horticulture Agent with the NC Cooperative Extension
Service in Granville and Person Counties. It is located at 601
N. Madison Blvd., in the parking lot of Person Industries, across the
street from the Cook Out Restaurant. On opening day, the market
will have a large variety of different vegetables, meats, and plants
for sale, from growers in the local area.
Meats for sale on Saturday will include pasture raised Angus beef
(steaks, roasts, ground beef), pork, and chicken, and farm fresh eggs.
Vegetables will include Asian salad mix, lettuce mix, curly and red
Russian kale, green garlic, red and green loose leaf lettuce heads,
caraflex cabbage, turnip greens, cilantro, parsley, spring onions and
kale.
Annual bedding plants and flowering plants in hanging baskets will
also be available.
On-farm baked goods will include rhubarb pies & empanadas,
strawberry pie, 3 berry & apple, whole wheat, sourdough, rosemary
and basil garlic bread, zebra rolls, hamburger rolls, dinner rolls,
chocolate chunk, peanut butter, snickerdoodles, and oatmeal walnut
raisin cookies, laminated pastries, croissants, bear claws, cream
cheese, apricot and cinnamon rolls,
homemade crackers with Chipotle, wasabi, sea salt, and rosemary
flavorings.
The market was started as a result of Cantaluppi applying for and
receiving a $30,000 Community Grant from the RAFI-USA Organization to
build the 100' X 45' structure (see photo), along with $14,000 from
Person County to install electrical outlets, overhead lights, and a
sign for the roof.
The Person County Tourism Development Authority is renting the large
billboard that sits atop the market.
Sixteen vendors have already signed up to sell at the market this
season and the market is expected to draw many customers as 21,000
vehicles pass the location daily, according to NC Dept. of
Transportation traffic counts.
A grand opening is planned for Saturday, June 4 when more agricultural
products will be available, with lots of activities going on,
including cooking demonstrations of local products, the Got To Be NC
Motorized Shopping Cart handing out goodies and coupons, a live radio
remote broadcast by WKRX-FM radio, live music by Carl the Clarinet
Guy, and the RAFI Organization will be there, handing out the large
$30,000 poster check to Cantaluppi.
The event hopes to draw many customers to the market so they can get
to know and patronize their local vendors and to encourage more
consumption of local foods.
