LOCAL BUSINESS – Looking for specials on wine?  Then look no further than Hyco Marina.  Sharon reports that her distributor has offered some price cuts so she is passing them along to you.  Stop in and see their great selection and deals soon.  Also check out all the other local things you can buy there like Christmas mailbox wraps.  Support your local Hyco Lake convenience store this weekend or anytime while in the neighborhood.  We are lucky to have an American owned convenience store at Hyco.  More pictures at: http://www.hycolake.com/hycomarina/

Cell Tower Update –  I got my Christmas present early this year.  I got 5 bars!  The cell tower at Hyco Lake went live on Monday providing badly needed AT&T cell services to the surrounding area.  I can now leave work in Roxboro and maintain a cell phone all the way past Hyco Lake on Semora Road.  Last I heard, Verizon and US Cellular have not committed to co-locate on this tower as yet.  If you want to let Verizon know you aren’t happy with service, go to this link and rate them low – I understand they respond to this survey so the more people who do it locally, the better chance you have to improve services. https://survey.verizonwireless.com/vzwsurvey/

Also, on Monday night Dec. 6 at 7:00 PM, the County Commissioners will have on the agenda a Public Hearing to discuss the county cell tower ordinance.  The current ordinance was developed in 2002 when there was a concern about the proliferation of cell towers.  Of course since then, the economy has tanked and expansion by cell companies is mostly in large cities leaving rural counties “out in the dark” so to speak.  It is my belief along with a lot of other people that we need to adjust our ordinance to encourage cell tower development and expedite the process by reducing the over-regulations.  This also effects the future expansion of High Speed Internet Services in that presently the ordinance does not address these low height towers.  If you are not satisfied with current cell coverage or do not have high speed Internet Service, then you should be at the meeting Monday night.  A recent online poll at www.esinc.net resulted in approx. 83% of the respondents saying that they were not satisfied with cell coverage in Person County.  Only 9% said they were satisfied.

ADVISORY – Beginning 12/1/10 there are a few laws enacted you need to be aware of.  First, the “move over” law that applies to law enforcement vehicles now also applies to public utility vehicles so if you see Duke Energy working on the shoulder of the road, move over a lane or slow down – it’s the law!

Another law is that your license tag cannot have any of it covered up by a license frame.  I got behind a car yesterday with a Michael Jordan dealership frame and it was covering the “North Carolina” section of the tag.  This will get you a warning or ticket so look at your tags and make sure nothing is covered up!
