LOCAL BUSINESS – Southern States Offers 10% off on Tuesdays to Over 55 -  I didn’t know until this week that anyone over 55 gets 10% off at our local Southern States store.  If they don’t ask you if you are over 55, then remind them on Tuesdays and they will apply the discount.  I found this out this past Tuesday while buying bird food!

Crown Castle Receives Permit to Build Cell Tower on Longs Store Road Crown Castle is a tower owner who leases space to cell carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, US Cellular and others.  AT&T has committed to installing their equipment on the Crown Castle tower which has passed Person County Planning Board approval.  The tower is going up near the corner of the Semora Road and Longs Store Road.

Also, American Tower who is another tower owner has applied for 3 towers with one being at Hyco Lake on Wagstaff Road.  The report back from the Counties Consultant is due any day now on these 3 towers.  Once they report back, a public hearing will be requested by American Tower.  Hopefully by March or April the permits for the 3 towers will be completed and approved by our County Commissioners.  Once approval is obtained, the construction time is estimated to be less than 30 days according to American Tower.

ADVISORY – The Person-Caswell Lake Authority reminds you to pick up your new boat dock tag at the office.  All docks have been reassigned new numbers so you’ll have to get the new tag and put it up.  West and Woodall has volunteered to go get your tag and put it up if you can’t get up here soon to do it or if you don’t have the means to mount the tag.  It is suppose to be located in a place that can be viewed from the water.  Call or contact West and Woodall at: (336)322-5800 or email to: whit@westandwoodall.com  Thanks West and Woodall for providing this as a service to the Hyco community! The numbering system use the logic of starting at the North Hyco Hwy 57 bridge going counterclockwise around the shoreline and ending up back at the bridge so if you are near St. Georges, your number may be single digits and if near Tommy Middleton, then 2400 or so.

Do you know what Cap and Trade is all about?  Most of you know I retired from Duke Energy having spent some 23 years there in the power generation department. So I follow what is going on in the energy field pretty closely especially power generation.  I worked in coal plants at Hyco and Mayo and spent some time during startup at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant. With the recent cold winter and resulting high energy bills, it is important to know how the Cap and Trade Bill may affect us if passed. Cap and Trade attempts to reduce carbon emissions by either adding additional environmental equipment, cutting production or buying of carbon credits.  The bottom line is if it is passed in current form, you could see your Duke Energy bill increase by 75% - if your recent bill was $300, then under Cap and Trade it could be $525/month!  Now I’m all for clean air and water but there has to be some sanity applied by our government or we will be spending the bulk of our income on over aggressive environmental regulations. We have to get back to building nuclear power plants also – if wimpy France can generate 90% of their power needs from nuclear, why can’t we?  We can if the government reduces licensing time and the public is educated on the benefits of safe nuclear power generation.  That’s the end of my soap box this week!  Need more info, contact me: randy@hycolake.com
