10/23/09

LAKE LEVEL – Hyco Lake level is now at 408.9’ which is about 20” low.   You can always get real-time data on the www.hycolake.com web site from USGS or click here

LOCAL BUSINESS – Aunt Millie's in Milton is now having Karaoke on Weds nights.  Bonnie and I have been several times the last couple of months and they have some good local talent.  We also have been getting the chef salad and cheesy bread sticks along with beverages and splitting it because it is so large.  It’s hard to spend over $20 there for two people so come out a enjoy!

Yoders Mart (www.yodersmart.com) in Yanceyville near the Hardees has a good newsletter.  Check out their web site and sign up for the newsletter.  They also are open on Sunday afternoon so take a scenic ride up through Milton and go down Hwy 62 to Yanceyville.

ENTERTAINMENT – The Flaming Star is having a fund raiser this Saturday, 10/24 at the nite club. BBQ chicken and Pork from 11-4 with bands Southern Storm and Cowboy Outlaws.  Cost is $10 per person and the proceeds go to the Semora Volunteer Fire Department.  Pizazz will also perform on Saturday night so come on out and enjoy while helping the Semora VFD.  Next weekend is the annual Halloween party with prizes so get your scary costume ready.

Listen to Bill Lester's Saturday Afternoon Beach Party on WKRX 96.7FM for your favorite beach and shag music.  Call Bill at 336-599-0266 for request.  Bill will also be inducted to the Beach Music Hall of Fame during the annual awards week November 11th thru the 15th at Myrtle Beach.  Congrats Bill!

Rock of Ages 4th Annual Old World Wine Festival is also this Saturday 10/24 from 3-7 PM. Wine, arts, classic cars, food, music and prizes. Cases of wine %25 discount.  Rain or shine. 1890 Charlie Long Road. No admission charge.  See their NC State Fair award winning wines.

Keep up with the latest entertainment on our Calendar.

COMMUNITY FUNCTIONS – The Roxboro Rotary Club is having a food drive tomorrow Saturday 10/24 at Wal-Mart. Please bring canned items and also monetary donations are accepted.  Proceeds go to the Christian Help Center and the Food Pantry here in Person County.

PERSONAL FAVORITE – T&O Drug Store in uptown Roxboro provides no-wait prescription filling.  If you go to the big box or chain stores for your prescription and hate the waiting in lines like I do, then go to T&O on Main Street.  Ronnie and the staff will insure your wait is minimal and on top of that, they will advise you on ways to save money on that prescription.  I am amazed at the people who say that T&O works hard to keep the cost of prescriptions low.  And, you can call ahead and have your prescription ready when you get there.

ADVISORY – Watch out for those stopped school buses as there is a campaign on by law enforcement to step up on violators of the flashing lights and stop sign.  It is a 5 point hit on your driver’s license to pass a stopped school bus plus unsafe to our children!  If you see the lights flashing, you have to stop.

PLANT INFO – During this time of year, you may hear loud noise from the plant early in the mornings.  This is a normal sound of safety or electromagnetic steam valves being operated during startup of one or more of the generating units.  The steam lines are cleared out of any moisture before admitting steam to the turbines to prevent damage to the turbines.  During this time of year, the demand for power is low due to the mild temperatures outside reducing heating load so the units are cycled off-line at night for efficiency reasons.  The nuclear and hydro plants carry can cover most of the load during the mild nights and weekends.

CELL TOWER UPDATE – The latest on cell towers is that there is activity to put up possibly 4 cell towers in the northern sections of the county with one of those being at Hyco Lake.  I’ll let you know if there are public meetings or if community support is needed for permitting.  If you need more justification to help us justify our need, see this link: http://www.hycolake.com/TeleInfo.htm which is also located on the lower left part of our homepage.

ADVERTISER HIGHLIGHT – Each newsletter, we highlight a paid advertiser on the www.hycolake.com website.  If it were not for these paid advertisements, the site would not be dynamic as it is and provide local information for Hyco Lake and Person County.  Please support the advertisers!
