ADVISORY – The Person/Caswell Lake
Authority has issued their December
newsletter. Highlights include changes in the cost of lake
permits, shoreline lease and community building. I recently talked to
a guy that moved down from the northeast and he said he lived on a
small lake and paid as much per month as we pay per year in shoreline
lease! Be thankful of our economical lease rates. There is
also info about the cottages, the Bill Barker Community Building,
amphitheatre, shelters, nature trails and an article I wrote back
during the drought concerning irrigating from the lake. You can
read the full newsletter and the previous ones at this link: Lake
Authority News Also note that any water craft located
below the 420’ contour must have a lake permit no matter if it is
running or not otherwise you will be cited after June 1st. PERSONAL FAVORITE – We’re
constantly adding new vendors and services to our database so if you
need a service that has been recommended by a customer, check out the
list. You can search for services at this link: Looking
for Area Services – Click here. It’s been several years since we’ve had a
major ice storm so many lake owners are not familiar with the length
of power outages that may occur. Duke Energy has increased
tree trimming and added disconnects and fuses to minimize the outages
but the facts are that eventually we will have another major ice storm
resulting in several days of power outage. One of the major
distribution lines that serves Hyco has about 125 miles of
“exposure”. This means if you add all the tap lines and the
distribution line length which originates at the sub-station on 501
North near the old Pizza Hearth, you have a case where if the line is
taken down anywhere near the source, then all the customers on that
line are out. In the past what has happened is that trees become
laden with ice and they sag or fall onto the power lines. This
knocks down the lines, the poles and in many cases if you have
overhead power service, it pulls it away from the house. I
remember not having power for 4 days during the last outage and I’m
not near as remote as a lot of customers. I bought a whole house
generator several years ago and it keeps me going as long as I have
propane gas. Tommy
Lawrence Electrical Contractors installs whole house generators so
give them a call if you don’t have one! 599-4771 You can
see the current outages at Duke Energy Online (if you have power
and Internet access) at this link: Duke Energy Outage Control Center If/when a ice storm
occurs, Duke Energy will bring in crews from other areas to help restore the
lines and equipment but it could still take several days to get power
restored at your house depending on how much damage has been done so
plan ahead accordingly! Also, if you haven’t put a fuel additive such
as Sta-bil in your lake toys gasoline, then it’s not too late.
Sta-bil and other additives will decrease the effects of gasoline
separating and also minimize moisture problems in gasoline so that you
will have a successful start-up this coming season. ADVERTISER HIGHLIGHT – Each newsletter,
we highlight a paid advertiser on the www.hycolake.com
