9/19/08LAKE LEVEL – Hyco Lake level is now
normal at 410.5’. We crested at 411.5’ on Sept. 7 thanks to
the hurricane Hanna! You can always get real-time data on the www.hycolake.com
web site from USGS or click
here. CELL TOWER UPDATE – The latest activity
on possibly getting a cell tower on Hyco is that I am talking with a
independent tower operator who has a tower that was moved from Cary.
If we can get cell companies to commit to co-locate on the tower, the
operator would likely install the tower on Hyco. I’ll advise
if I need additional support from the community. If you need
more justification to help us justify our need, see this link: http://www.hycolake.com/TeleInfo.htm
which is also located on the lower left part of our homepage. I am also talking to a major cell carrier who is
to make a site visit very soon. This is laying the groundwork to
possibly construct one and maybe two towers in the Hyco area. I
have supplied data to the carrier and they are very interested in
evaluating the area for increasing their coverage in Person County. ENTERTAINMENT – The annual
Danville/Pittsylvania fair is starting tonight 9/19/08 and runs thru
Saturday the 27th. Nightly entertainment including in
admission. The fair is probably the largest north of our own
State fair and is worth the trip up just beyond Milton, NC. They
have music by Eric Church, the Bellamy Brothers and my favorite,
Clarence Carter on Saturday night 9/27. See complete info and
schedule at: http://www.dpcfairgrounds.com
The

community festival and if you’ve never been, take advantage of our
good weather and ride on up to Yanceyville to join 30,000 friends.

blood drive tomorrow 9/20 at Clement Baptist Church. There is a
need for blood in the Texas region that was hit by hurricane Ike last
week. Please remember the storm victims and donate blood. PLANT INFO – High Water Levels – Well
it is good to discuss high water levels for a change. Many
people ask why Duke Energy doesn’t just release more water
before impending storms to give the lake more storage for the
predicted rains. Well, they can’t! The lake is impounded
by a main dam and spillway. The original concrete spillway was
at elevation 410.0’ and later raised to 410.5’ to increase
storage. One inch of lake level is equal to about 300,000
gallons so 6” would be 1,800,000 gallons. The spillway
functions as the control on lake level as water “spills” over this
concrete structure. The reason the lake level may temporarily
exceed normal level is that the spillway cannot flow more water than
is coming in from the rivers and streams so the level increases to
some level above 410.5’ until the water can be spilled over.
I’ve seen water spilling over the spillway of some 3’ and back up
the lake, levels will be greater than this because of the incoming
flow. The lake is “off-kilter” during this time.
It’s like pushing water with a squeegee – the highest level is
right at the push point. The Afterbay lake which is below the
spillway is controlled by Duke Energy to maintain downstream water
flow. There are large “tainter gates” and butterfly valves there
to control the inrushing water from the main lake also. Be sure
to watch out for any remaining debris floating in the lake! ADVERTISER HIGHLIGHT – Each newsletter,
we highlight a paid advertiser on the www.hycolake.com
website. If it were not for these paid advertisements, the site
would not be dynamic as it is and provide local information for Hyco
Lake and Person County. Please support the advertisers! This week, we are highlighting Sam Kennington
for County Commissioner. I’ve known Sam for a long time
and have worked with him on several community projects. Please
look over his web site as it has just about anything you would want to
know about Sam. www.samkennington.com
