LAKE LEVEL – Hyco Lake level is now 409.3’ which leaves us about 14” low.  It would take about 4” of rain to get us back to “full pond” at 410.5’ so Hanna may get us there!  You can always get real-time data on the www.hycolake.com web site from USGS or click here

LOCAL BUSINESSES – Hyco Marina and Store is having a sale so check out their stock as they have a lot of good gift items for that special person or party you are attending!  I’ve taken some photos of the store and soon will have a web page with more info.  In the mean time you can see the photos online at: http://picasaweb.google.com/randyrking/HycoMarinaStore#

CELL TOWER UPDATE – The latest activity on possibly getting a cell tower on Hyco is that I am talking with a independent tower operator who has a tower that was moved from Cary.  If we can get cell companies to commit to co-locate on the tower, the operator would likely install the tower on Hyco.  I’ll advise if I need additional support from the community.  If you need more justification to help us justify our need, see this link: http://www.hycolake.com/TeleInfo.htm which is also located on the lower left part of our homepage.

Complete Home Cleaning Services – I apprised you about the new cleaning business last week in town.  Arthur and Ronna Broadwell are “hands on” owners literally and they like the face-to-face relationship with their customers so give them a call.  They are licensed, insured and bonded.  Located 201-B South Madison Blvd beside Suntrust Bank.  They offer free in home quotes and can handle small and large jobs.  They also do windows and have carpet cleaning services. (336)592-5336  Give them a call today!  See more info on their expanded page at: http://www.hycolake.com/CompeteHomeCleaning.htm

ADVISORY – Tropical Storm (possible hurricane) warning is up for our area. Be sure to secure items on decks and docks or wind gust may deposit them somewhere else including through your glass doors!  Also don’t to forget to raise your boats up high due to the threat of high water levels.  After the rain, be cautious due to possible floating debris in the lake – this can last several days as it washes out from surrounding shores and may be partially submersed.

PLANT INFO – High Water Levels – Well it is good to discuss high water levels with the impending tropical storm on the way.  Many people ask why Duke Energy doesn’t just release more water before impending storms to give the lake more storage for the predicted rains.  Well, they can’t!  The lake is impounded by a main dam and spillway.  The original concrete spillway was at elevation 410.0’ and later raised to 410.5’ to increase storage.  One inch of lake level is equal to about 300,000 gallons so 6” would be 1,800,000 gallons.  The spillway functions as the control on lake level as water “spills” over this concrete structure.  The reason the lake level may temporarily exceed normal level is that the spillway cannot flow more water than is coming in from the rivers and streams so the level increases to some level above 410.5’ until the water can be spilled over.  I’ve seen water spilling over the spillway of some 3’ and back up the lake, levels will be greater than this because of the incoming flow.  The lake is off-kilter during this time.  It’s like pushing water with a squeegee – the highest level is right at the push point.  The Afterbay lake which is below the spillway is controlled by Duke Energy to maintain downstream water flow. There are large “tainter gates” and butterfly valves there to control the inrushing water from the main lake also.

AREA SERVICES -  Some of the businesses servicing the area are:

Eldridge Meeler – Lawn and property care services, 599-3237  - I personally know Eldridge and can vouch for him.

Peninger Landscaping – I’ve run across David doing lawn care a lot around the lake. (919)730-5802

SECURITY INFO – There was a rash of incidents over the last several weeks where items were stolen from boat houses and even some homes broken into.  I have found a small camera and DVR available that you can install most anywhere or even just sit on a shelf.  It is a little larger than a pack of cigarettes and is battery and AC operated.  It can record on motion detection.  I have one in stock so if you would like it, contact me.

There were some arrest last week of people who may have broken into places around the lake.  If you have anything missing, you may want to contact the Person County Sheriff’s office as they recovered a lot of items.  I also read in the Caswell County paper that they arrested “Bonnie and Clyde” thieves who stole a lot of things in the area.  They were residing in Leasburg which is on Hyco River and not far from lake properties.

Hope you have a great weekend
