08/08/08LAKE LEVEL –Someone asked recently how
the lake level today compares to what we had a year ago since we saw
an extreme drought last year. Today, we are currently at
408.68’ and last year on this date, we were at 408.85’ so
we’re just a little lower than last year. We need rain to get
us back up to normal and at this time, it would take about 8”.
I’m not hoping for a hurricane but that’s all it would take to put
us back to normal. You can always get real-time data on the www.hycolake.com
web site from USGS or click
here. LOCAL BUSINESSES – The wine tasting was
successful last Friday and Sharon at Hyco Marina and Store
reports she sold more wine than the previous event. Another wine
tasting will occur on August 29th so put that on your
calendar. I met a lot of the subscribers to this newsletter that
I hadn’t met before at the tasting. One subscriber ask me how
I get all this information and I told him it was from many resources
including: being a member of the Roxboro Rotary Club (found out the
subscriber was a member of Alamance club), member of Roxboro
Development Group, Chamber of Commerce, lake resident, uptown business
owner, 23 years at Duke Energy and many other contacts in the
community. Also, we plan to feature Hyco Marina and Store
in the coming weeks so look for that soon. Bonnie and I met a few members of the Rotary Club
last night on a project and ending up eating at Vesuvio’s II
in uptown. Everyone had a great meal including: pizza,
spaghetti, salads, hot wings, hamburger and beverages. I had the
Italian sub and it was fantastic. The place has a great
atmosphere so if you haven’t been lately, stop by the Abbitt Avenue
location of Vesuvio’s II across from the Courthouse. They are
really willing to please you so don’t be afraid to ask – Bonnie
did and got all “flappers” in her hot wings! Also got word that a new business named “Create
a Critter” is opening this Saturday in the Lowes Foods shopping
center. These are custom, handmade critters that the person
receiving will treasure. So if you’ve run out of ideas, stop
by there to get a custom made critter. For any age 3-100.
(336)330-0869 ENTERTAINMENT – I have a subscriber that
has 2 tickets for sale to the concert at Walnut Creek this Sunday
featuring Journey, Heart and Cheap Trick. They sold for
$123 but will sell for $75. If you want them, call
(336)592-1959. The Flaming Star has Southern Storm
performing Saturday night. TFS has added two 12’ HD projection
screens and pool tables for your enjoyment. Stop in to see them
and enjoy the music and entertainment. More info at: www.theflamingstar.com
Haven’t
heard of any music at Warm Waters Restaurant this weekend so
come out and enjoy the food and view. I heard the pan-seared
Tuna and oysters Rockefeller were to die for! Also had the
chicken Quesadilla and it was as good as you’ll find. Listen
to Bill Lester's Saturday Afternoon Beach Party on WKRX 96.7FM
for your favorite beach and shag music. Call Bill at
336-599-0266 for request – now if we could only make a cell call
from the boat on Hyco and Mayo! Personality

Festival will occur September 5th and 6th.

Or just show up at 8:30 on the 6th at Eaton Corp on 501
South of Roxboro. Help support this worthwhile event and
enjoy seeing many other motorcycle enthusiast from the area.
Lunch and door prizes included. NEW PERSON COUNTY MANAGER – Meet Heidi
York and Amy Wehrenberg this Monday (8/11/08) at 5:30 at Vesuvio’s
II. Heidi is the new County Manager and Amy is the new finance
director. This event sponsored by the Roxboro Area Chamber of
Commerce and BB&T. The general public is invited. ADVISORY – You should be aware that
today is 08/08/08. So, what is the significance of this you ask?
.08 is the legal limit of BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) that you can
have while operating an auto or boat. Tonight, the North
Carolina State Highway Patrol is having a state-wide road stops so if
you’ve been consuming, don’t drive! Also be aware that if a
boat is stopped on the lake by a law officer, then you as a passerby
should slow to a no-wake speed and idle by. You should not cause
a wake that will interfere with the officers. SECURITY INFO – There was a rash of
incidents over the last several weeks where items were stolen from
boat houses and even some homes broken into. I have found a
small camera and DVR available that you can install most anywhere or
even just sit on a shelf. It is a little larger than a pack of
cigarettes and is battery and AC operated. It can record on
motion detection. I have one in stock so if you would like it,
contact me. Hope you have a great weekend More
