04/17/08WARM WEATHER – The recent warm spell has brought out
the boats at Hyco. Most every day there have been fishermen (women) and also ski
and pontoon boats cruising the lake. As I mentioned last newsletter, if you go
to let you boat down and it doesn’t work, call Jamie Mundy at: 336 599-0946 for
services. DSL NOW AVAILABLE – DSL high speed Internet is
available on parts on the lake now. The areas are around Shore Drive and around
the Wagstaff Road areas. Also high speed wireless is available in several
areas. ENTERTAINMENT – If you are near my age, then you
remember The Platters, The Coasters and The Marvelettes. Well, they are at the
Caswell County Civic Center on Saturday 4/19. Two shows – one at 3 and one at 8
PM. See
more info here Clash of the Carts in Uptown Roxboro will occur next Saturday
4/26. Come on up to Roxboro Saturday morning for free fun and entertainment at
10:00. Expect more entertainment than racing as these “run-whatcha-brung
contraptions will make you laugh. Eat at some of the fine local restaurants and
then head to the lake! See more info at: www.historicroxboro.com
Every Saturday afternoon, our own Bill Lester of WRXO Radio
plays all your favorite beach music tunes. Tune into to Bill at 96.7 FM and
give him a call as you cruise the lake at 599-0266 to request your favorite.
With gas prices, I’m sure there will be more “float boat parties” on the lake
where a group of pontoon and other boats all tie to together and hang out. Bill
will be playing beach tunes from 3 to 7 PM every Saturday. The Flaming Star continues to bring live music to the area.
The Brown Brothers from near South Boston have played in the area and performed
last Saturday night at the Flaming Star. By popular demand, the Brown Brothers
will be back tonight, Friday April 18 to entertain you again. Come out and
enjoy their great music. Next Saturday night, local favorite The Pizazz band
will return. The house rocks when Pizazz is there for their high energy
performance. Check out the schedule and more info at: www.theflamingstar.com
Coming soon is satellite TV with 12’ projector screen for live action including
sports and NASCAR. All new coolers assure you of your favorite cold
beverage. 2nd Annual Cork and Pork Festival is scheduled for
May 10th at Rock of Ages Winery. The Castaways Band and Pizazz Band
will perform. See more info and buy tickets at: http://www.rockofageswinery.com/ CELL PHONE RECYCLING – I’m sure you’ve got some old
retired cell phones laying around. If you are wondering what to do with them,
then consider donating to the Good Deed Foundation. They will actually send you
a pre-paid return envelope or box so there is no cost to you to box up those
phones and send them to someone who will salvage them and recycle them. Sign up
online at: www.gooddeedfoundation.org/aarp Sounds like a great “green”
project for your Church or school! PERSONAL FAVORITES – This is a new item on my news
list. Sometimes with experience we find personal favorites and pass along the
information to others. One item that most people may not be aware of that is
made here in Roxboro is Our Pride Pimento Cheese. You can find it in most area
grocery stores. I never was a big fan of store bought Pimento Cheese spread but
absolutely love Our Pride. You can actually walk in the production plant beside
Southern States on 501 North in Roxboro and get a big, 32 ounce container for
$5.00 and that is a deal! I use it like a dip just plowing through it with a
Waverly cracker but it is good on a sandwich, celery and many other ways. Click here for directions if needed. Another personal favorite is Chicken Salad from Midtown
Market in Danville, VA. They make their own chicken salad and it is like the
old fashion kind that grandma made. They also have a line of meats that are
higher quality than normal so slip on up to Danville, fill up with $3.19 gas
while you are there and get some fine chicken salad. Buy some for a friend too
because they will want some. It’s right off of West Main Street after you go
thru uptown Danville. Click here for directions. And finally, what’s a cookout with hot dogs and hamburgers??
Chili makes the hot dog and there is none better than Wilson’s chili. I find it
at Cash Store on Chub Lake Street in Roxboro. Bill Wilson makes the chili from
an old family recipe that I remember as a child getting at Wilson’s (and before
that Long’s) market in Roxboro. Unfortunately the local meat market is gone but
Bill still makes the chili. He keeps some frozen so buy up a batch of it by
dropping by home. Call Bill at: 599-9515 I guarantee it’s like old time and the
best around! The only thing close to it in Roxboro is Toufielk's in uptown
Roxboro. RESTAURANTS – The combo KFC/Taco Bell is schedules to
open any day now as soon as the parking lot is paved. The old KFC has closed as
they prepare to move into new digs. There is a new lease on the old KFC so look
for a new restaurant there soon. Mickey’s in Semora has changed hands. I haven’t been by to
check them out but will do so soon. I hear they are considering opening late on
Saturday nights so you can get a bite to eat after going to The Flaming Star –
sounds like a good idea to me! Lakeside is in process of renovation so look for the
re-opening soon. It’s warm, boats are running so the time is now! I think the
new owners are honeymooning so as soon as that gets finished up, it will be back
to work! LAKE PROPERTY – Some of the Realtors say things are
picking up on people looking at lake property with the warm weather. Also, the
owner of The Harbor has sold a prime lot and has others so don’t wait until it
is too late to get in on this gated, upscale development. A natural preserve
and water just about surround this development so this will never be a
over-populated area. There are a few lots left that have a 2500 sq. ft. dock
which is 700 sq. ft. larger than can be built now on Hyco so this is a onetime
shot to get these lots. It also has Caswell County tax rates and services. See
more info at: The Harbor on Hyco BURNING BAN LIFTED – The statewide burning ban has
been lifted – just be careful burning. More later . . . To join this mail list, click here and put JOIN in the
