LAKE LEVEL – It’s back!  That’s right, Hyco Lake level returned to normal at 410.5’ last Friday morning around 9:00 AM after the recent rains.  Hyco has three active streams that normally flow all year consisting of North Hyco, South Hyco and Cobb’s Creek.  This is the difference in Hyco and Mayo lake as Mayo has yet to return to normal. Mayo creek stops flowing during the summer months where the Hyco tributaries continue to flow.  Also, Hyco has a large runoff area surrounding the lake so rains within several miles are channeled into Hyco.  Hyco also has a “Afterbay” lake below the main dam that is used by Duke Energy to maintain downstream river flow as required by Federal and State laws.  Mayo does not have a Afterbay.  Once the lake reaches 410.5’, the spillway maintains the lake level by spilling water into the Afterbay.  During heavy rains, it is the spillway that is the limiting factor on water discharging the lake which results in high water levels.  The high water levels normally return to normal fairly quickly after the rain ceases.

WEATHER – Last weekend there was rain and also high winds.  If you have property on Hyco, you may want to check on a couple of things this weekend.  First, if you left your boat or jetski lift lowered this past summer during the drought, then it may be below water level now and the boat or jet ski could float away if not tied.  Second, the high winds coupled with wet grounds caused several trees to blow over damaging some homes so you need to check on that before the rains and winds come again this weekend.

PHOTOS NEEDED – We have several request for area photos of wildlife and lake scenes.  If you have any digital photos you would like to share with us and don’t mind us using, please send to me.  We will place a “photographer credit” on the picture if we use it for any commercial reasons.
