Happy New Year to everyone!

LAKE LEVEL - Well the rain last weekend of around 2.5" resulted in the lake recovering approximately a foot so now the level is at 408.20'.  Normal level is 410.5 so we are still 2.3' low.  You can see that a couple more rains in the 2-3" range should put us back to normal.  Duke Energy does not release any water from the main lake as the Afterbay is the lake that maintains downstream flow in Hyco River.  The lake level is mainly influenced by incoming river flow, rainfall and evaporation.  The power plant uses some water for plant losses (makeup), environmental waste handling and drinking water.  The cooling towers evaporate most of the water used by the plant as you can see the plume from them at times.  The steam in the plant is a closed cycle so it is condensed and reused.  The hot water leaving the plant is traveling through a condenser which is like a big radiator so it doesn't mix with the plant water/steam. You can view the real-time lake level online at: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nc/nwis/uv?cb_00065=on&format=gif_default&period=31&site_no=02077280

SECOND PLANT CHIMNEY - The second new chimney is now in use as unit 4 at the plant is now utilizing scrubbers to remove Sulfur Dioxide from the flue gas.  You can see the water vapor plume emitting from it now.  Last I heard, no decision has been made to tear down the original chimneys including the two 800' ones.

BURNING PERMITTED - The State has lifted the state-wide burning ban since we had the rainfall last weekend.  Still be careful if you do burn due to the extended dry season certainly created a lot of dead trees and brush.  If you need fire assistance, there are several volunteer fire stations around the lake but they all are dispatched through 911.

LAKESIDE RESTAURANT - Lakeside is being remodeled and will open under new management.  As soon as we have all the details, we will let you know.  I sure will miss those fried oysters and sautéed shrimp!

DSL NOW AVAILABLE - DSL high speed Internet service is now available in the Shore Road and Whetstone area of the lake.   Give us a call or email bonnieking@esinc.net to get setup today.  We are the only ones who do turn-key installation and can provide a WiFi network throughout your house and even down to the boathouse with the DSL!  Rates start at $34/month including taxes and access fees.  Others may advertise lower rates or bundled services but read the fine print which adds taxes and access fees.  You can also contact us using our online form at: http://www.hycolake.com/contactus.htm  More DSL info at this link: http://www.esinc.net/internet/dsl.asp

CELL TOWER UPDATE - We are working with a independent tower company to possibly locate a cell/wireless tower in the lake area.  I can't divulge any more information at this time.  I will update you as this process proceeds.  I have dealt with this company in the past and feel confident that if commitments can be arrange with the cell carriers, the tower will be built.
