Greetings from Hyco Lake and the Roxboro Area!  Hope your summer fun is continuing and you are enjoying the weather.

LAKE LEVEL – The rain has been varying a bunch as you probably know.  On Tuesday we had flash floods in Roxboro and yet when I got home, no rain at all.  Amounts varied from 3” in Roxboro to 2/10 in my gage.  The resulting rains this week bumped the lake level up a couple of inches but we are currently at 409.08’ so down about 17”. You can always get real-time data on the www.hycolake.com web site from USGS or click here

LOCAL BUSINESSES – Work is moving fast on The Cookout so keep watch out for those charcoal burgers soon.  Work also is very active at Yamato in the old KFC building so hopefully that will come together and be open soon.  They are advertising for help now.

Also hearing that there is a new produce stand going into part of the old Oakland Ltd building beside the new Cookout.

Cell Tower Update

Last week I reported that there is renewed interest in placing a cell tower at Hyco.  This continues to look favorable and I have received over 400 responses supporting the tower.  It carries a lot of weight saying that you will consider switching to the carrier who serves Hyco so if you haven’t completed our form, do so.  I have inserted the announcement from last week below again…..

Your support is needed at this very moment to convince a major cell phone carrier to locate a cell tower at Hyco Lake.  A major carrier would like feedback on the interest in expansion of services near Hyco Lake and we need you to complete our contact form at this link: http://www.hycolake.com/contactus.htm  Please select in the dropdown box that you will either switch to the carrier who serves Hyco area or support the expansion of services to the Hyco area – either way, please take 30 seconds to complete the form.  This is not a sales pitch and your information will not be shared with solicitors. This is the best chance I’ve seen in 3 years to possibly get a cell tower at Hyco.  Whether you live there or not, please support expanding services in Person County.  Forward this email to anyone who you know would support this expansion.

It also helps to have letters of support from businesses – I have several of these so far and will pass along to the prospective carriers.  There is support info on this page for you to review to help build our case for a tower: http://www.hycolake.com/TeleInfo.htm Thanks for your overwhelming support!

PERSONAL FAVORITES – Turbeville Cantaloupes – You probably may have heard that the annual Turbeville Cantaloupe festival is today at the fairgrounds in South Boston.  Many of us used to attend this festival when it originated on John Wade’s farm in Turbeville and now it has grown to a large festival in South Boston. The Chamber has tickets if you would like to attend today.  Turbeville cantaloupes are some of the sweetest cantaloupes you will find anywhere.  It is worth the trip up to Turbeville on Hwy 58 between Danville and South Boston to get several. There are roadside stands there on 58.  Also, IGA on North Main street in Roxboro tries to keep them although they go fast.  They had a few left this morning.

Concord United Methodist Church is finishing up their vacation bible school this Sunday and have invited all area residents to join them at 11:00 to celebrate.  They are located at the flashing light across from Twin’s Store on the Semora Road or Hwy 57 North of Roxboro.

Hope you have a great weekend
