Happy 4th of July to everyone!  Hope you have a safe and joyous holiday.  We’ve got a full slate of news so here goes!

LAKE LEVEL – The current lake level is 409.47’ so it is down a little over a foot.  We had about an inch of rain since the last report which increased the lake level about 2”.  You can always get real-time data on the www.hycolake.com web site from USGS or click here

LOCAL BUSINESSES

Josie’s (Formerly WC’s) – We recently ate lunch at Josie’s which is across from The Brass Eagle on North Main.  They have daily specials and a lot of homemade dishes so check them out.  Try the chicken salad! Open Mon-Fri

Electra’s Massage and Bodywork Therapy – Also just went to Electra for a full hour massage – she did a great job and loosened up those aching muscles in my bad back!  I highly recommend her services.  She just completed a course of study so she knows all the latest-greatest stuff. Call 504-4704 to schedule an appointment.  She is located on Lamar Street in the rear of Lois Beauty Shop which is ˝ block from the new Police Station going north.  Can’t figure out what to give as a gift? Give a massage!

J.C.s now open Friday/Saturday nights – J.C.’s Breakfast Anytime on 501 South is now open for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights so stop by and see what they have cooking.

Green’s Jewelers – You should know that Gold is approaching $1000 per ounce and the result is increasing jewelry prices.  The good news is that Green’s Jewelers can take your old gold pieces and either custom build another piece of jewelry or give you cash for the old gold either white or yellow.  Robert Bragg is the jeweler and designer and has made several pieces of jewelry for my wife.  He has also modified pieces so that they don’t lose their diamonds.  If you can’t figure out what to give the spouse, go see Robert and let him draw out a custom piece for you that no one else has.  Located on Main Street in Uptown Roxboro.

Farmer’s Market -  Open M-S 7:30-11:30 – We went to the Farmer’s Market this morning and the place is running over with customers.  People are finding out that the prices are better, the vegetables fresher and no worry about food poisoning from our fields!  Today they had:  Silver Queen Corn, tomatoes, squash, cukes, cabbage, onions, potatoes, peppers, flat snaps, zucchini and blueberries.  Get there early because they run out some days.  They will be open on the 4th so go by early, eat breakfast and then enjoy the parade and music in Uptown Roxboro at 10. They are located on Depot Street just below the Christian Help Center.

Sis’s Café – Semora -  now open 6 days for lunch and dinner Mon-Sat.

Talbert Rentals – With the closing of A-Rent-All Shop, Talbert’s has opened their own rental business. They have most any tool no matter how small and heavy equipment so check them out at 969 Old Durham Road or call 597-3891 to check on availability.

Hyco Restaurant to Re-open – Jeff and all the crew have been busily working to get the restaurant back open.  Last report I had is that they are opening today and will have a D.J. tomorrow night.  Stop by and look at the complete remodeling inside and out.  Even though the owners smoke, I hear that smoking will not be allowed inside so everyone can enjoy the atmosphere!

ENTERTAINMENT

ReMax Premier Realty – Free Hot Air Balloon Rides Thursday – want a view of Hyco from the air?  Well come on out to The Landing which is on the right just beyond the 3rd bridge on Hwy 57 across from Hyco Marina and Restaurant.  The rides begin at 6:30 and will last until 9:00PM so start off the holiday with a great experience.  Bring your camera to catch some great photo ops.  ReMax is located in Roxboro adjacent to Total Fitness on Semora Road.  597-8000

Fireworks displays

The spectacular fireworks on Oak Pointe are planned to start as soon as it's dark enough on the Fourth.  Roughly 40 minutes worth of dazzle.  Every year lately more and more boats are dropping anchor off the point and honking for their favorite displays.

Also fireworks up near the ski course so position in between Oak Pointe and the Ski Course for double action!

There will also be fireworks on the Caswell County end of the lake near across from The Harbor on Hyco.  This is right up from the Public Boat Launch area and campgrounds.

Hyco Lake Annual 4th of July Boat Parade – After attending the parade in Uptown during the morning, come to Hyco Lake to see the annual boat parade.  Boats and crew decorated for the holiday will start near Hyco Marina and make a loop down toward the dam and back.  Join in or just watch from the shore or your boat anywhere along the way.  The parade will begin around 3:00PM.

Parade in Uptown Roxboro at 10:00 AM Friday – There is a large turnout of entries for the 4th of July parade in uptown Roxboro so come on up early and watch all the entries. Motorcycles, Scouts, Race cars, Clash of the Carts entries, fire trucks, antique cars, Force Protection military vehicles Cougar and Cheetah, etc.  You can observe anywhere on Main Street from near the Museum to Merritt Commons.  Thunder Band will provide live music right after the parade around 11 until 1 at the Main Street Pavilion at Merritt Commons.  There will also be an antique car show in the parking lot.  Food and drink available on site.

Band and Fireworks at Person High School – Band at 7:30, fireworks around 9PM

Keep up with the latest entertainment on our Calendar.

ADVISORY – It’s always a good reminder this time of year about boating safety due to the high number of boats on the lake during the 4th.  There are many regulations that are located on this link that you should be familiar with. http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/HTML/ByChapter/Chapter_75A.html

Some of the more noteworthy regulations are:

Maintaining at least 100’ distance from docks and other boats when at any speed above idle.

No open or un-muffled exhaust allowed at any time other than sanctioned boat races.

No abrupt turns in front of other boats – especially watch this when a skier falls – decrease speed, look and then turn around to get the skier.

No operating boat while under the influence – same limit as vehicles of .08

No fishing, stopping or pulling of skiers or tubes under the bridges or through the canals.

The Wildlife Officers have been very busy lately so be sure your fire extinguisher is charged, you have a throw preserver, enough life jackets for everyone including the children and your registration is current.  Also make sure all your lights are working and they are on when moving.

PLANT INFO – Nothing to report on the power plant this week – if you have a question about the plant, let me know.

Hope you have a great weekend
