6/28/08Happy 4th of July – no it isn’t
this weekend but next weekend but Hyco Lake goers start early to
prepare for the 4th! LAKE LEVEL –Current lake level is
409.6’ so that means the lake is down almost a foot. During
this time of year, with no rainfall we can expect the lake to go down
an inch about every two days. You can always get real-time data
on the www.hycolake.com
web site from USGS
or click here. Just add 400 to the gauge reading and you
will get actual lake elevation. 410.5’ is full lake. LOCAL BUSINESSES – We went to Sis’s
Café Thursday night (Formerly Mickie’s BBQ) in Semora and the
place was packed along with a constant take-out line. The fresh
hamburgers and other dishes using hamburger are getting rave review so
stop by and see Sharon and Carolyn soon. Also try the homemade
deserts – ummm good – the chocolate pie is GREAT. Closed
Sunday and Mondays. (336)234-0009 Work is moving fast on the former Lakeside
Restaurant now. They are targeting to open this Thursday
July 3. I stopped by yesterday to see them and they said their
customers have been stopping by constantly to see when they are
opening. It is a completely remolded so come on out and see for
yourself. King Bee 3 at Four Way which is the intersection
of North Madison Blvd and North Main Street on the North end of town
has added a “Beer Cave” which is essentially a walk-in cooler with
all your adult beverages on display. If you’ve ever been in a
Sheetz store then you know what I am talking about. So for the
coldest adult beverages in town and low prices, go down to King Bee 3.
You might need a jacket if you ponder long on which brands to take
home! It’s 32 degrees inside. Yoder’s Store is moving from near Milton
to Yanceyville and will open July 1st. They are
expanding and will have a fresh deli in the store. They are
locating in the building across from Hardees. It should be on
your list of stops when near the lake! Baldwin Beef is located in Caswell County
and offers all natural, grass feed beef for sell directly to the
public. They just won a state award and are growing by leaps and
bounds. We had some of their beef last weekend and it was great.
They are open 9-5 Monday thru Saturday. Be sure to visit their
web site for more info. Take a cooler with you as their beef is
flash frozen. www.baldwinbeef.com
ENTERTAINMENT The Flaming Star continues to offer live
bands every Saturday night so beat the heat, dodge the rain showers,
avoid the mosquitoes and meet your friends at The Star.
Ample room for everyone. Brown bagging allowed and all your
favorite beer and wine coolers on site. www.theflamingstar.com Fireworks for the 4th – There
will be a parade in uptown Roxboro beginning at 10AM Friday the 4th
so come on out before hitting the lake to start off the 4th
right. There will also be fireworks as usual at Person High
School that evening. Around the lake, I’ve heard of some fireworks
displays scheduled. If you have ones you know about, please send
me an email of when and where they will occur. I know there is a party
near the Power Plant Saturday night and I know they normally shoot
fireworks – just look for all the boats. Also there is
normally a “boat parade” on the afternoon of the 4th
beginning near the restaurant. More info next week as I get
updates. Birthday Party for “Coach” – there
is a surprise birthday party for Coach (Bob Thompson) this Saturday at
Charlie’s on 9th street in Durham beginning at 7:00 PM.
Live music and food is provided. For those who don’t know
“Coach” he is the former Duke Women’s swim coach and lives on
Hyco Lake. He is just a all-round fun guy and has been a main-stay on
Hyco for years. Come out and help celebrate Coach’s birthday
Saturday. Keep up with the latest entertainment and events
on our Hyco Calendar. ADVISORY – Local tomatoes OK! I’m
sure you’ve heard about the tomato concern of having Salmonella.
North Carolina tomatoes are not in this advisory so be sure buy “Got
to be NC produce”! We checked with some of our local produce
