6/13/08Hope you are enjoying the early arrival of
summer!  Don’t forget this Sunday is Father’s Day. LAKE LEVEL –Current lake level is
410.1’ so that means the lake is down about 5”  You can
always get real-time data on the www.hycolake.com
web site from USGS or click
here.  Just add 400 to the gauge reading and you will get
actual lake elevation.  410.5’ is full lake. LOCAL BUSINESSES – There is an open
House at The Harbor this weekend.  Most any local real estate
agency has representatives that can discuss the offerings at The
Harbor.  You can visit their web site at: www.theharboronhyco.com
Work is moving fast on the Cookout with
concrete being poured this week.  Shouldn’t be long before they
fire up the charcoal grill. Essentials Plus (Formerly The Flea Market
Shop) in uptown Roxboro provides you an outlet for that “stuff”
you don’t want to throw away because it’s not trash but it’s in
the way or you don’t need it.  Whether cleaning out a basement
to make it into a rec. room, rental property or any other situation
where you need a hand moving out the old to move in the new,
Essentials Plus can do it.  David will come out and give you a
estimate to either do a piece-meal or whole house, “broom sweep”
to remove those items.  They also sanitize mattresses so they can
take care of those. David says that furniture moves good and the
slowest items are china cabinets and hutches.  Also visit
David’s store Essentials Plus right in front of the Court
House on Main Street in Roxboro.  Call David for a site visit:
336 583-9577 Creative Crafts and Framing is another
uptown store that does great framing work.  I recently had a WWII
Marine dress uniform box-framed with a picture and brass plaque placed
in it of my Dad who served in WWII.  They did a wonderful job and
it will be something I’ll keep forever.  They are located two
doors down from the Kirby Theatre in Uptown Roxboro.  336

Chamber of Commerce – Did you
know you don’t have to be a business to join the Chamber??
There are many active individuals who are members of the Chamber.
This is a great way to get together with your friends and rub elbows
with business leaders in the community all working for a greater
community.  Without organizations like the Chamber, Roxboro
Uptown Development Corporation, Roxboro Area Merchants Association
and other economic groups, we would not be advancing business,
industry and jobs.  The City Council and Person County
Commissioners count on groups such as these to spur and streamline
development.  See more info on the Chamber at this link and
contact me if you would like to know more: www.roxboronc.com

smoky atmosphere we’ve had the last couple of days brings out a
couple of things we take for granted – clean air and water!
Having worked and retired from Duke Energy, I am acutely aware of
all the resources it takes to maintain our natural resources.  I
recently talked to a school teacher who visited China and reports that
most every day in the industrial areas of China, a smoky haze is
present much like what we’ve seen the last couple of days here –
glad I live in the U.S.A! Hot water explanation – a reader asked
me this week about the lake temperature being higher down near the
dam, Oak Pointe and Whetstone.  Without giving you the full
detailed explanation, the lake temperatures are mainly affected by the
          following conditions: 1)
Ambient temperatures both day and night – the higher
they are, the more solar heating the water receives and hot nights do
not allow for much evaporative cooling. 2)
Duke Energy plant load – the hotter the weather,
the more air conditioning load requires more plant KWH output and more
BTUs from the cooling water the plant results in higher lake
          temperature 3)
Lack of rainfall – rainfall provides both cooling and
inversion. Inversion is the process of hotter water rising to the top
and colder to the bottom.  Rain being cooler will cause the top
layer to cool and then fall toward the bottom adding cooling and
          oxygen. 4)
Reduced river inflow – lack of rainfall and water
usage from Hyco north and south along with Cobb’s Creek results in
less inflow from the creeks and rivers which is cooler due to being
mostly shaded. One of the reader’s concerns was that the hot
water may kill fish.  It has been my experience in past years
that when a fish kill did occur, the majority of the time it was due
to the lack of oxygen and not hot water.  Fish will go to deep
water which is much cooler than surface water.  Oxygen is added
mainly with the rainfall and of course with surface exposure.
The problem occurs when oxygen is not carried to the bottom by colder
water (rainfall).  Oxygen rich rainfall will result in the
inversion process and fall towards the bottom with oxygen for the
fish.   Boats can actually help the situation by stirring up
the water and adding some oxygen in the process.  If you’ve
ever had an aquarium, you are aware of the need for oxygen.  Some
farm ponds use aeration also and fountains add oxygen.  If you
want the full explanation, let me know and I will send it to you or if
you want to know more about the environmental laws Progress is
following to maintain air and water quality. I’m not the official
representative of Duke Energy – just an informed source from
years past! Hope you have a great weekend More
