Hope you had a good Memorial Day weekend.  The
lake was full of boats, the campground active with campers and the
grills were in full blast around the lake!  You’d never know
gasoline is almost $4/gallon.  I asked Jimmy Dallas at The Sport
Shop, LTD if he had any electric boats and he said “No, but I’ve
got some so good on gas you would think they are electric”!  Good
answer Jimmy. The new 4-stroke outboards are getting much better fuel
economy and the 3-tube pontoon boats.

LOCAL BUSINESSES – Work has started on the
new Cookout that is locating across from Wachovia Bank on the
boulevard.  It shouldn’t take them long to be in operation since
        this is a drive-up business.

The old KFC restaurant is being turned into Yamato’s
and shooting for a July 1st opening.  It’s the same
people who run Yamato’s at Northgate Mall in Durham.  They report
they have had several request for opening a store in Roxboro.

We went to see Mickey (formerly of Mickey’s BBQ)
last night in Semora.  He is running Hamlett’s Pizza and
reports that business is good.  Mickey has of course good pizza,
hot dogs, wings, hamburgers, bologna, BBQ and fish plates with slaw and
fries. Mickey is there mostly Thursdays and Fridays so stop by to see
him – the store is open 7 days.  Mickey is thinking about pulling
his grill up there and barbecuing some chickens like he use to do so let
Mickey know if you would like for him to do that from time to time.
If he does, I’ll make note of it in my email newsletter.  Call in
orders at: 234-0008  Dine in or take out.  We like the thin
and crispy pizza!  Mickey says his vanilla ice cream and hot wings
        are the best around.

Force Protection has reported in The State,
a South Carolina newspaper, that they are moving their Summerville
operations to Roxboro.  Force bought the old C&A Elm plant and
has remolded it ready for production operations.  You can see the
        article at this link: http://www.thestate.com/business/story/419447.html
They hope to make the full transition by the end of 2008.

Hyco Marina and Store is having a wine
tasting tonight (Friday) starting around 8:00.  They have many new
wines and other items in the store so come on out and enjoy.
Discounts offered on whole cases of wine.  Sharon says she is
        expecting a large crowd.

Ronnie Chandler of T&O Drug Store and myself
have put up a new net on one of the tennis courts at the recreation
area.  The courts are not in good shape but at least one of them is
usable for hitting some balls.  If we get enough people interested
in restoring the courts, the Lake Authority would like to hear from us
so pass along to any board members or Rangers.  The walking trail
is in great shape with new paving so take advantage of the exercise and
nature on this great trail.  Parking spots are at the head end just
off of Kelly Brewer Road where you turn into the park.

The City of Roxboro is pursuing improvements
for pedestrians around Roxboro including sidewalks, greenways and
crosswalks.  They need your input whether you live in Roxboro or
work or visit so take 5 minutes to fill out their online survey.

We’ve been contacted by several churches around
the lake that are inviting lake goers and others to their services.
We’ve specifically heard from Concord United Methodist Church
        near Twin’s Store http://archives.umc.org/Directory/ChurchDetails.asp?mid=222&FAC=43400
        , Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church
        on Longs Store Road http://lamberthmbc.tripod.com/index.html
,  and Red House Presbyterian Church in Semora on
        Highway 119 http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncccha/memoranda/churches/redhousechurch/redhousechurch.html
I’m sure there are others in the area who open their doors but we
thought it appropriate to mention the ones close by.  Some are
considering “early” services for those who like to get their day
going early and then enjoy the lake.

        PERSONAL
        FAVORITES – well,
this week I want to tell you about something I’m sure you can use
especially if you live near water and woods!  All of us have
spiders – I know, it’s not a secret anymore – you have spiders!
In the boat house, around the decks, in the boat and yes, in the house.
The lake is a good test ground for products that eliminate spiders and
other bugs.  I’ve found that Suspend SC is a product that
does great on spiders and really other bugs too.  Mix it is a
garden sprayer and spray indoors and outdoors.  Shoot for dark
spaces, webs and the area in general.  It last about 6-8 weeks and
does great. I have sprayed one day and the next not only are the spiders
gone but a lot of times they take the cob webs with them!  I order
        online at: http://store.doyourownpestcontrol.com/PestControl/Product/Suspend__SC_2_Pts_KI430-2D2.html
One bottle last 2-3 seasons depending on how much area you cover.

Another favorite I have is for aluminum especially
pontoon boats.  You can make your pontoons look like new real
easily.  Aluminum Brite can be sprayed on with a garden
sprayer and rinsed off with a hose.  It will return your pontoon
tubes to near new brightness and it is really quick.  The trick is
to spray a section and then rinse from the bottom up with a hose.
Sometimes a quick brushing will help get the buildup off if your boat
has been sitting in the water.  You can find it at local boating
stores or at the NAPA store in Roxboro.  It comes in a gallon
        plastic jug.

SCAM ALERT - Keep an Eye on your license
        plate.
A woman said her son found his license plate missing so he called the
police to file a report.  They
told him people were stealing the plates to get free gas.  Given
the rise in gas prices, people have taken to stealing license plates,
putting them on their car, then getting gas and running.  The gas
station will have "your" license plate # and you could be in
trouble for "pump and run."  Check your car periodically
to be sure you still have a plate.  If you should find it missing,
file a report immediately!!!  Keep an eye on your license plate!
Make sure you always know it's there!  When the license plate
is reported as the "drive off vehicle," it's YOU they contact!
Be aware!!!!  Be aware of your license plate s, most of us
never look to see if the plates are there or not.

ADVISORY – don’t forget lake shoreline
rentals are due to be paid before July 1 or be prepared to pay a $30
penalty.  Also any boats on or even in the boat house have to have
a yearly permit or risk being fined – it doesn’t matter if you use
the boat or not, if it is below the 420’ line, a lake sticker is
required.  See more info on the Lake Authority newsletter at this
        link: http://www.hycolake.com/NewsLetters/lakeauthorityboard.PDF
