The great weather is accommodating a lot of outside activities so be sure to take advantage of them!

FOOD – The Masonic Lodge is having their annual fish fry today so stop by the lodge on Leasburg Road for drive-up or dine in service.  Great fish and drink for $6.  Available at lunch and at dinner.

Hot Dog lunch for the Christian Help Center next Friday May 9 at Long Memorial Methodist Church in Uptown Roxboro from 11-1 in the fellowship hall. Come help support the Christian Help Center as they provide a valuable service to our area all from donations.

ENTERTAINMENT – The Castaway’s will be at The Flaming Star in Semora Saturday night so call The Star to reserve a table as a large crowd is expected.  See more information on their web site at: www.theflamingstar.com  The Pizazz Band was there last Saturday and as usual they entertained a large crowd.

Bill Lester says he will be playing the top Beach and Shag songs this Saturday afternoon. Tune into to Bill at 96.7 FM and give him a call as you cruise the lake at 599-0266 to request your favorite.  With gas prices, I’m sure there will be more “float boat parties” on the lake where a group of pontoon and other boats all tie to together and hang out.  Bill will be playing beach tunes from 3 to 7 PM every Saturday.

“Clash of the Carts” in Uptown Roxboro was a huge success for the first time out of the gate last Saturday.  Congratulations to all the entries as all of them were winners!  See photos on a link at: www.historicroxboro.com  Make plans to build your cart for next year’s event or come join the fun festivities!

“Alive After Five” May 15 in Uptown will bring in Raleigh favorite band Cafe' Mars.  Café Mars consists of an all-star line-up of Raleigh/Durham-area musicians, and can be found most any night of the week at restaurants, clubs and private events delivering a unique fusion of Top-40 hits, contemporary jazz, and danceable rock-n-roll, all filtered through their jazz/funk sensibilities.  Bring your lawn chair if you don’t plan to dance the night away.  Food and beverage available on site.  Starts after five of course.  More info on the band at this link: www.gigmasters.com/LiveBand/CafeMARS/

Family-A-Fair is having their annual event for children at Huck Sansbury Park on Morgan Street Saturday from 10-2 so bring the kids or grandkids down for entertainment, rides and food.  About 1700 people attended last year.  Free!

2nd Annual Cork and Pork Festival is scheduled for May 10th at Rock of Ages Winery.  The Castaways Band and Pizazz Band will perform.  See more info and buy tickets at: http://www.rockofageswinery.com/

PERSONAL FAVORITES – From time to time, I bring you some of my local favorites in and around our great County.  This week I want to tell you about Flat River Nursery.  Now before you think this is just a flower and shrub business, let me tell you about their secret.  Beautiful, huge strawberries, $1.10 a lb. if you pick and $1.85 a lb. if they pick (call ahead if you want them already picked).  They have greenhouse tomatoes and greenhouse cucumbers at $2.85 a lb.  They have lots of hanging baskets, bedding plants and herbs.  Please call 336-364-2460 for more information.  Located at: 1548 Holeman Ashley Rd., Timberlake, NC which is just off of 501 South of Roxboro. Or click this link for MapQuest

I can personally attest to the tomatoes being as close to fresh, garden taste and they are almost perfect in shape and quality.  They are also vine ripened so no pulling and shipping these green.  Buy a bag load because you’ll want to eat them daily!

NEW BUSINESS – Grand Occasion Party Rentals is here just in time for that party at the lake or in your backyard!  Located at 969 Old Durham Road inside of DATCO and Landscape Supply near Talbert Building Supply.  They have available: Tables, chairs, tents, large ice chests, wedding supplies, linen table covers, linen napkins, cake stands, chocolate fountains, champagne fountains, chafing dishes and many other party items. Delivery and setup available.  Come by or call them at: 336 599-4773

MOTHER’S DAY – Don’t forget Mother’s Day is next Sunday May 11. Take Mom out for lunch and/or dinner and maybe a ride on the lake.

GAS PRICES – In case you are wondering, the price at the gas pump at the dock at Hyco Marina is currently at $3.99 so make plans accordingly!
