Power Plant New Chimneys and Water Vapor Plume - you probably are
wondering why you are now seeing a constant plume of vapor coming from
one of the new chimneys at the plant. The plant is going through a major
environmental upgrade with the addition of "scrubbers" which
remove contaminants in the flue gas. As a result of using water and
limestone to remove the contaminants, some of the vapor exits the
chimney after the sulfur has been removed using the water and limestone
mixture. So when you see the water vapor, be assured that this is a good
sign of pollutants being removed from the flue gases. The other new
chimney will go into operation in a few months as additional upgrades
are completed.
Water Level in Hyco Lake - the water level has dropped over a foot
from normal due to the absence of rain in the recent months. Duke Energy does not release any water from the lake so evaporation and
decreased in-flow from the creeks and rivers causes the decreased level.
Water is released from the Afterbay lake which is below the main dam. We
need a few inches of rain to return the lake to normal level.
